South Street, Kites, and a 55,000 person Birthday Party.

"Art is the center of the real world"

Last weekend (9.15.21) Laura, Katy, Hannah, and I went down to South Street, because Laura had never been. We took the subway down to the South & Lombard Station and then walked down South Street. It's awesome to view South Street in the night scene. There are tons of people out and about.

Our Kite Project for 3D Foundations is underway! We began building them in class this past Tuesday. I designed a triangular kite with three layers of fabric designing the overall look of the kite. I am using orange and blue ripstop as my fabric. Ripstop the fabric that is used for camping tents. It is strong and stable, and is good for pressure and tension when flying a kite. Here's what my kite looks like so far.

Its only about two thirds of the way done.
And, if you can see, that's what our studio's look like!

BRUCEEEEEEE!

I took a surprise trip to East Rutherford, NJ, with Brody yesterday, to surprise Uncle Clyde, Aunt Margie, Cassie, and Dad, for Bruce's last concert at Giants Stadium for his Wreaking Ball Tour.
It was a great concert, and a great way to celebrate Bruce Springsteen's 63rd Birthday!

A day of kite flying.

Today, for class, we took a trip to Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park.
It was so much fun. Earlier this week, we finished out box kites. Hemming the edges to a quarter inch, and making them the perfect length to tightly fit around our box kite frame.

Today we attached the bridle to our kites as well as the spools.
Then, all seventeen of us, including Asuka, pilled into the twelve person van. Lets just say we did eventually make it to Belmont Plateau safe and sound.

Here are some pictures and videos of the kites we flew put together in a video montauge I made.

Now that we have practiced with the box and hexonagle kites, our Big Project is to create a kite, more sculptural than actually being able to fly, ourselves. You can either come up with your own design or copy a kite in your own way. All types of kites are open. So, being so enthused about this project, and everything 3D, I created my prototype tonight in the studios. Here are some pictures of the small kite that I will eventually be making almost five times this size.

The Hooting Begins

Three weeks in! Two weeks of classes down! Two trips into Center City! Unlimited moments of fun.
Numerous memories made. New friends found.

Life at Temple University has a blast since the second I moved in. After moving in on August 21st, I had a whole week to get adjusted to campus while participating in multiple fun events all around campus. First off, was the Honors Scavenger Hunt. While given clues to places around campus, we had to take pictures at each place.

Of course my team won, and we received a Temple Honors Mug, as well as a keychain! Big prizes if I say so myself.

Temple Hosts an event titled TEMPLE FEST every year during Welcome Week. This event is located down Liacorous Walk where most of Temple's clubs, church groups, greek life, and sports teams have tables set up so you can sign up for as many clubs as you would like. It was so much fun!

On Thursday night, Target opened up late at night for Temple Students, they bused us there, and they allowed us to go shopping, and even win prizes. As you can see below.. I was one of those winners. And I won 96 tubes of Chapstick.. Apparently it'll only last me a year, but I think it might last a little longer than that!

On Friday, I met up with my friend Irma from California. She is one of my closest friends here at Temple, and is also in the Tyler School of Art.
We went to Temple Fest together on Friday, August 24th, but this time they had fun activities set up. The picture below is us pretending to be kindergarteners again with out big blowup chair! We had a lot of fun getting our palms read and making tye-dye shirts!
This picture isn't the best, but we had such a fun day!

On Saturday, Temple was giving out Free Septa Day Passes to everyone! My whole new group of art friends were able to get some, and it was so much fun. We took the subway down to South Street and walked all the way up and down South Street. It was an awesome time being in the city. We went into thrift shops, funky art stores. It was so cool!

On Monday, classes had begun!
On Monday's and Wednesday's, I have three classes. From 8-9:40, I have english. And being an honors student, it takes so much effort to get to class. Especially when its only 100 yards down your floor! Then from 12-2:30 I have Foundations Drawing. I am having a lot of fun in that class so far. My teacher reminds me a lot of Todd, so I suppose thats a good thing! Then from 2:40-5:10, I have 2D Foundations. I love this class so far. The pictures below are two studies I had to do for our sketchbooks. I studied Sol LeWit and Piet Mondrian.

On Tuesday's and Thursday's, I have only two classes. From 9:30-10:20, I have Art History. Which I am loving so far. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it as much as I am, but I love it! Then from 11:00-1:50, I have 3D Foundations. I LOVE this class. Currently, we are making Kites! It is so cool to learn how to make them. We started with a four foot Hexagonal Kite. It was awesome. We haven't flied them yet, because of the weather, but we should this coming week! This past week, we started to assemble out box kites. Yesterday, we learned how to use a sewing machine to make the fabric for our kites. It was a lot of fun.

Last weekend, was the First Temple Football Game. Temple Owls vs. Villanova Wildcats.
It was so much fun. I went with my friends from the floor, Laura, Hannah, Katy and David. We chanted along to the TU chant, and cheered on our friend Chanelle in the marching band. The whole game was tons of fun. And how could it not be when we CREAMED villanova 41-10? It sounds like a easy win to me Mr. Mataraza! (:
Oh yeah.. I got my face painted too. Have to have some Temple Pride.

It was a great game.

Yesterday, Thursday, September 6th, was Fashion Night Out, so.. we decided to go! It was really fun going into center city at nighttime and walking around the beautiful city of Philadelphia. We had a lot of fun walking into fancy stores, and seeing the new trends of fashion.. I think!
