the creations have begun
I am in love with the three art classes that i'm taking this semester.
Beginning Ceramics:
This is a basic intro to ceramics class that goes over all the skills and techniques needed to work with clay. I'm so glad that I was able to take ceramics for three years in high school with Cutch, because it has helped so much! (I even have my own cool tool now).
Our first assignment is a self-portrait bust. One made out of solid clay and one with coils.
I decided to create the solid piece into my typical super cheesy, but meaningful smile! I love the quote (not sure if I made this up, or I heard a version of it somewhere), but it's
"smile, and the world smiles back"
That quote is what the piece is about.
This is how my solid form began with the basic structure of a face
then i learned to smile
then i had to cut myself into pieces to hollow out the clay
then i just smiled.
My coil piece I took into a different direction, and more of "who am I" conceptually. As all of you know how tall I am, and i'm constantly being asked how tall I am. I decided to take it in that direction.
This is where i'm at so far, before I go back into the studio today to finish it.
i also got a haircut the other day.. if you can sorta see.
I may add the gestures of a face to the back of the head.. not sure.
Jewelry 1
This jewelry class is the basic introduction to creating jewelry. We are beginning with a ring assignment. We are doing a process called lost-wax casting. You create your ring in wax, cast (mold) the wax form in a plaster-type substance. The cast now goes into a kiln where the wax is melted away, leaving the form in the plaster. The cast is taken out of the kiln while still hot, and metal pellets are melted and shot into the form to create the solid ring. After the third try, this is my final wax-design.
My piece is based off of 9/11, and the wreckage from the attacks on the World Trade Center.
I'm really excited to cast this and see what it looks like in Bronze.
Off Loom Structure 1
This is an introductory to fibers class where we learn the basis of off-loom techniques. Felting, kitting, crocheting, basketry, rope-making, and some other off-loom techniques.
We began the semester with felting, which is a process of taking wool, laying it out in layer, tying it up within a screen. Then you go through a process of hot and cold water. Hot water, agitate the wool, rise, cold water, agitate the wool, rise, and repeat until it appears that felt has been made,
or you cannot pull the wool apart.
Here is one of my 4 pieces of felt, and the two projects I made from those pieces of felt.
This was one project. The yarn was applied through a process called Needle-Felting
This was my second project where I cut the felt into strips, and then filped them on their side to reveal the layers, and then created my own shape with the strips.
Here was one of my pieces of felt.
I used natural wool for these ones.
TRAVEL! I have had so many opportunities to explore Philly a little more.
I was able to go to China Town and it was so much fun!
my friend Kallie and I did a little photo-shoot while in Chinatown too.
City hall is my fav. I alway take picture of it whenever I pass it.
I was also able to to explore Old City and parts of Society Hill for my religion class. Here are some picture from those adventures.

With only 47 days to go! HootaThon has been going strong! I went to CHOP the other day to volunteer at Radiothon, and go to meet Phillies Center Fielder, Ben Revere... and the Phanatic too!
But I want to thank those of you that have donated to HootaThon. I have currently raised $708 blowing away past my first goal of $500, and only $42 away from my new goal of $750! Any donation is a donation that will change the lives of the kids at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. If you would like to donate, please click here.
If you have any questions, please just let me know!
Thank again for checking in, and can't wait to see all of you soon!!!
